Synology’s long awaited upgrade from the RS3614xs+ which, in its own rights was a great server and very popular amongst SMB’s wanting extra performance, can now rub their hands with glee as the RS3617xs+ is more impressive and is packed with high end hardware and software features.
The RS3617xs+ is the most powerful Synology model to date as this 2U rack NAS has a 6-core 2.2GHz Intel D-1531 Xeon, 8GB expandable to 64GB memory. Another bonus is the RS3617xs+ has quad Gigabit ports and is 10-Gigabit (10GbE) ready out of the box.
This is Synology’s first appliance to come with dual embedded 10GBase-T copper ports and if that’s not enough, it also has two spare PCI-Express expansion slots to add even more.
For a 12-bay dual-10GbE enabled rack NAS, the price is competitive. The RS3617xs+ has even more room for capacity and network expansion and the feature list for Synology’s DSM software just keeps getting better.
Runner-up: QNAP TVS-1282-i7-32GB-US
QNAP was very subdued when working on this project, as it needed to come up with a product that offered backward and future compatibility, not an easy task, What QNAP introduced was inspirational, built around their tiered storage concept, with users mixing and matching drives, with 8x 3.5” and 4 x 2.5” SSD’s or just standard 10k-15k drives.
Not to be outdone the x82 series built on ideas that were borne from users and partners, QNAP pushed the boat out with a combination of M.2, SSD, SATA. PCIe NVMe SSD support that completes what they call perfect storage trio. Media users will also jump with glee as 3 x HDMI ports swapping between HD station and Linux desktop.
Affordability is not a question as the models offered are extensive just with the TVS-1282 which is powered by high-performance 6th Generation Intel® multi-core processors with options including Core™ i3, Core™ i5, and Core™ i7. Overall the TVS-1282 and the TVS-882 are NAS servers that will appeal to business buyers of every size, and also to those home users that want a serious media container that can constantly serve up video, audio and all things media.
